Key points
- A minimum wallet can hold GH₵5,000 and move GH₵3,000 a day; medium GH₵40,000 and GH₵15,000; enhanced GH₵75,000 and GH₵25,000.
- The minimum tier also has a monthly cap of GH₵10,000; the Chamber of Telecommunications reported no monthly change for the other two.
- Money cannot land in a wallet that is already at its balance cap, which is why a large payout can fail on the bookmaker's side.
- On MTN, dial *170#, My Wallet, then Check Wallet Limits; the upgrade from minimum to medium is self-service on the same menu.
The acca lands late on a Saturday, the bookmaker approves GH₵3,200, and your phone stays quiet. An hour later the cashier shows the withdrawal as failed with no reason given. Very often the wallet is the problem, not the bookmaker. Every mobile money wallet in Ghana has a ceiling on what it can hold and another on what it can move in a day. A payout that would push you over either one is turned back.
The ceilings come in three tiers. The Bank of Ghana approved them and the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications announced them for all its member issuers. The same figures therefore apply on MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money. They took effect on 1 March 2024 and no later revision has been published.
What is the maximum amount you can hold on MoMo in Ghana?
The maximum amount you can hold on MoMo depends on the tier your wallet was placed in when you registered or upgraded. A minimum wallet, the one most people get with a Ghana Card alone, can hold GH₵5,000 at any one time. A medium wallet can hold GH₵40,000 and an enhanced wallet GH₵75,000. Before March 2024 those caps were GH₵3,000, GH₵25,000 and GH₵50,000.
The balance cap counts everything in the wallet, whatever day it arrived. Keep GH₵4,000 in a minimum wallet and let a bookmaker try to send GH₵1,500: the transfer fails, because the wallet would end at GH₵5,500. Moving money out first, to a bank account or an agent, clears the space.
How much can you send and receive in a day and a month?
How much you can send and receive in a day is the second limit. The daily figures are GH₵3,000 for a minimum wallet, GH₵15,000 for medium and GH₵25,000 for enhanced. Ask your network how it counts a day’s transactions before a large cash-out.
The monthly cap matters only on the minimum tier, where it is GH₵10,000. The Chamber's release said there were no changes to the monthly limits for medium and enhanced accounts. MTN describes those two tiers by their daily limits and wallet sizes, with no monthly figure. A punter who deposits GH₵100 most days and withdraws a few times a month can reach GH₵10,000 before the month ends.
Why can't you receive money on your MoMo?
You cannot receive money on your MoMo when the incoming amount would breach either cap. The sender sees the failure, not you. That is why a bookmaker's cashier may show a withdrawal as failed or returned while your own wallet shows nothing at all. The money never left the operator, so there is nothing to reverse; the operator simply retries once there is room.
- Balance cap reached: your wallet plus the payout would exceed GH₵5,000, GH₵40,000 or GH₵75,000 for your tier.
- Daily cap used: deposits and withdrawals earlier in the day already total GH₵3,000, GH₵15,000 or GH₵25,000.
- Monthly cap used on a minimum wallet: GH₵10,000 of transactions since the first of the month.
- Wallet not fully registered: a line without a verified Ghana Card sits below even the minimum tier until the record is updated.
For a large win, split the withdrawal into amounts that fit your tier and spread them over days. Or raise the tier before you request the money. A list of betting sites in Ghana that pay to a wallet will not help with a cap; the limit sits on your side.
How do you check and raise your MoMo limit?
To check your MoMo limit on MTN, dial *170#, choose 6 for My Wallet, press # for the next page and choose 8 for Check Wallet Limits. After the PIN an SMS arrives with the daily, monthly and balance figures for your line and how much of each you have used. Telecel and AT customers can get the same figures from their own customer care lines.
- Dial *170#, choose 6 for My Wallet, then 7 for Upgrade Profile Type.
- Give a source of funds and a next of kin name and number, then confirm with your PIN. MTN says this moves a minimum wallet (GH₵3,000 a day) to medium (GH₵15,000 a day).
- For the enhanced tier, use the MTN online request form with a picture of your Ghana Card plus a utility bill, bank statement or notarised tenancy agreement in your name.
- Keep the ticket number; MTN says to follow up through its digital channels if the request is not completed within 24 hours.
MTN lists the documents by profile: Ghana Card for minimum, Ghana Card plus source of funds and next of kin for medium, and those plus proof of address for enhanced. The mobile money betting sites page explains how a payout reaches the wallet once the room is there.

Questions and answers
What is the maximum amount you can hold on MoMo in Ghana?
GH₵5,000 on a minimum wallet, GH₵40,000 on a medium wallet and GH₵75,000 on an enhanced wallet. These balance caps were approved by the Bank of Ghana and took effect on 1 March 2024 across all mobile money issuers.
How do I check my MoMo limit on MTN?
Dial *170#, choose 6 for My Wallet, press # for the next page and choose 8 for Check Wallet Limits. Enter your PIN and MTN sends an SMS with your daily, monthly and balance limits and how much you have used.
Why can't I receive money on my MoMo?
The usual reason is a cap. If the incoming amount would push the wallet past its balance limit, or past the daily or monthly transaction limit, the transfer fails on the sender's side. Move money out or upgrade the tier, then ask the sender to retry.
How do I increase my MoMo transaction limit?
On MTN, dial *170#, My Wallet, then Upgrade Profile Type to move from minimum to medium with a source of funds and next of kin. The enhanced tier needs an online request with your Ghana Card and proof of address such as a utility bill or bank statement.
Do the MoMo limits apply to Telecel Cash and AT Money too?
Yes. The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications announced the March 2024 limits for all its member electronic money issuers. The tier figures are the same on MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money. The menu steps to check them differ by network.
