Key points
- E-Levy, the 1% on transfers, no longer applies from 2 April 2025; MTN says wrong deductions after that date are refunded within 7 days.
- MTN's 0.75% wallet-to-bank fee, capped at GH₵5 and due on 1 June 2026, was put on hold by the Bank of Ghana on 26 May 2026 pending consultation.
- MTN's help centre says cash-in to your own wallet is free; cash-out is 1% from GH₵50 to GH₵2,000 and a flat GH₵20 at GH₵2,000 and above.
- MTN publishes no customer fee table for paying a merchant; the amount and any fee are shown on the approval prompt before the PIN.
The prompt lands while the match is already on: pay GH₵50 to the bookmaker, enter PIN. Below the amount sits a fee line, and that line is the only place the real cost of a MoMo deposit shows up. Everything else you have heard about MoMo charges in Ghana this year is already gone or on hold. What remains is published by MTN in a short list that fits on one screen.
Three things changed between April 2025 and June 2026. The E-Levy was abolished. MTN tried to add a fee on transfers to bank accounts and the Bank of Ghana stopped it within a day. And the cash-out schedule MTN set in March 2024 stayed as it was. This piece sticks to what MTN's own help pages and the regulators' statements say, nothing more.
Is E-Levy still charged on MoMo?
E-Levy is not charged on MoMo any more. MTN's help centre says the 1% charge on electronic money transfers stopped applying on 2 April 2025, after Parliament cancelled the law that created it. The change was automatic. The same page says a wrong E-Levy deduction from that date onward is refunded within 7 days, and that charges taken before 2 April 2025 are not refunded.
The Ghana Revenue Authority's directive was reported by Graphic Online on 3 April 2025. It told every charging entity to stop applying the levy from midnight on all channels and to refund anything deducted after the abolition. So a GH₵200 transfer to a friend no longer loses GH₵2 to the levy. MTN's page adds one line punters should not skip: regular mobile money service fees still apply.
Does MoMo charge for sending money to a bank?
MoMo does not charge the 0.75% fee for sending money to a bank account, because the fee never started. On the evening of 25 May 2026 MTN texted customers about a new charge. From 1 June 2026, transfers from a MoMo wallet to a bank account would attract 0.75% per transaction, capped at GH₵5. On a GH₵100 transfer that would have been 75 pesewas, and from GH₵667 upward the GH₵5 cap would have applied. It would have covered transfers to your own bank account as well.
On 26 May 2026 the Bank of Ghana directed Mobile Money Fintech Limited, the MTN unit that runs MoMo, to suspend the fee to allow further consultation. The Graphic report said wallet-to-bank transfers remained free of the proposed charge and that fees for wallet-to-wallet transfers and agent cash-in and cash-out were unchanged. No end date for the consultation was given, so a punter who moves winnings from MoMo to a bank should still read the fee line each time.
What does MTN charge for cash-out and deposits?
What MTN charges for cash-out is the one schedule it publishes in full. Its help centre, in the pricing section created on 1 March 2024, lists the fee for withdrawing at an agent by amount band.
- GH₵50 to GH₵1,000: 1% of the amount, unchanged from before March 2024.
- GH₵1,000 to GH₵2,000: 1% of the amount, raised from the old flat GH₵10.
- GH₵2,000 and above: a flat GH₵20, raised from GH₵10.
- Depositing cash into your own wallet, at a service centre, an agent or a partner bank: free, and MTN says to report anyone who asks for a fee.
Put in betting terms, cashing out a GH₵500 win at an agent costs GH₵5 and cashing out GH₵3,000 costs GH₵20. MTN's page on agents says a customer who is asked for more than the stipulated charge should take the agent's number or ID. Report it to a customer service centre or the call centre.
Who pays the fee when you deposit to a betting site?
Who pays the fee when you deposit to a betting site is settled on the prompt, not in a tariff table. MTN's help centre publishes no customer charge for paying a merchant. The approval screen shows the amount going to the operator and any fee on top; if the fee line reads zero, the operator is carrying the merchant cost. If a figure appears, that is what leaves your wallet beyond the stake.
The bookmaker's cashier page is the other place to look. Some betting sites in Ghana state that deposits and withdrawals are free of their own charges, and some print a withdrawal fee; neither is a MoMo charge. The MTN Mobile Money betting sites hub shows which licensed operators take the prompt and how a payout comes back.
- Read the amount and the fee line on the prompt before entering the PIN; a GH₵50 deposit should not show a GH₵50 total with a surprise fee underneath.
- If a 1% deduction appears on an ordinary transfer, treat it as a wrong E-Levy charge and ask MTN for the 7-day refund its page promises.
- If a wallet-to-bank transfer shows 0.75%, the suspended fee has been applied in error, and the Bank of Ghana's direction is the reference to quote.
- Keep the SMS receipt; it carries the transaction ID that customer care on 100 will ask for.

Questions and answers
Is E-Levy still charged on MoMo in Ghana?
No. MTN's help centre says the 1% E-Levy stopped applying on 2 April 2025 after Parliament cancelled the law. Any wrong deduction from that date is refunded within 7 days. Charges taken before 2 April 2025 are not refunded. Ordinary MoMo service fees still apply.
Does MoMo charge for sending money to a bank account?
Not the 0.75% fee. MTN announced it on 25 May 2026 for a 1 June start, capped at GH₵5. On 26 May 2026 the Bank of Ghana directed Mobile Money Fintech Limited to suspend it pending consultation. Graphic reported wallet-to-bank transfers stayed free of the proposed charge.
How much does MTN charge to cash out at an agent?
MTN's help centre lists 1% for GH₵50 to GH₵1,000, 1% for GH₵1,000 to GH₵2,000, and a flat GH₵20 at GH₵2,000 and above. Depositing into your own wallet is free, and an agent asking for extra should be reported to customer care on 100.
Who pays the fee when I deposit to a betting site with MoMo?
The approval prompt decides it. MTN publishes no customer fee for paying a merchant, so read the fee line under the amount before you enter the PIN. A zero means the operator carries the cost; a figure is what leaves your wallet beyond the stake. The bookmaker's cashier page states any charge of its own.
