Key points
- Article 46(1) covers players, club officials, GFA officials, match officials, ball boys and clubs, and says the list is not exhaustive.
- Article 46(2) sets a minimum one-year ban plus a fine of at least GH₵10,000, up from GH₵5,000 in the 2019 regulations.
- Every participant must sign the GFA Integrity Declaration Form under the 2025 rules.
- The GFA Executive Council agreed in 2022 to pay GH₵50,000 to anyone who volunteers information on match manipulation.
A midfielder at a Division One club in Techiman carries the same phone as everyone else, with the same betting apps on it. The difference is what happens if he uses one on football. Can footballers bet in Ghana? Not on the competition they belong to. Article 46 of the GFA Premier League Regulations 2025 has been in force since 1 July 2025. It says no participant of a league match or the league shall be involved in any form of betting or lottery in relation to the league. The penalty starts at a one-year ban and a GH₵10,000 fine, and the national team is told something stricter.
Who the GFA betting rule covers
The GFA betting rule in Article 46(1) lists players, club officials, GFA officials, match officials, ball boys and clubs, and adds the words including but not limited to. A physio, a kit man or a club media officer is inside the net. The clause also says each participant in football shall sign the Integrity Declaration Form, so nobody at a Premier League club can claim not to have known.
The 2019 version of the regulations, reported by the Daily Graphic in February 2020, carried the same list under Clause 46 with a minimum fine of GH₵5,000. The July 2025 rewrite doubled the money and added the declaration form. The GFA's 2022 Executive Council update described training on betting and manipulation for Premier League, Division One and Women's Premier League clubs. Referees and match commissioners get an annual pre-season session on the same subject.
What the penalty is for a player caught betting
The penalty for a player caught betting is set in Article 46(2): a ban of at least one year, plus a fine of at least GH₵10,000. Both figures are floors, not caps. The 2022 Executive Council update added that sanctions are also prescribed under the FIFA Code of Ethics and the GFA Disciplinary Code, which reach further where betting shades into manipulation.
The GFA pairs the stick with a reward. GHANAsoccernet reported in May 2022 that the Executive Council agreed to pay GH₵50,000 to anyone who gives information on attempts to manipulate matches. The decision followed a match-fixing scandal the previous season. The same report described the one-year ban and the fine, then GH₵5,000, for players caught in the act of betting.
Black Stars players and betting
Black Stars players and betting came up in a mandatory session run by the GFA Integrity Unit ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Players and officials of the senior national team were told that betting on football is strictly prohibited, directly or indirectly. Sharing inside information such as injuries, team selection or tactical plans is banned too. The briefing walked through how fixers approach players: by message, through third parties or with offers of money or goods. It pointed to confidential reporting channels open around the clock.
The wording is wider than Article 46. The league rule speaks of betting in relation to the league; the national-team briefing speaks of betting on football. Indirect betting is named, so a player who gives a cousin a tip or lets a friend stake through his account is caught by the same sentence.
Where fans and betting companies stand
Fans and betting companies sit in different places. Article 46 does not touch supporters; a fan who bets is not a participant, and the GFA has never claimed the rule reaches the stands. The third clause of the article speaks to companies instead. No betting or lottery company may use any fixture, result or other material of the league for betting purposes without GFA authorisation.
If you see a player, referee or official betting on a GPL match, or hear of an approach to fix one, the GFA's reporting channels are confidential. The GH₵50,000 reward stands. If betting is a problem in your own life rather than someone else's rulebook, the responsible gambling page lists the steps and the Gaming Commission line is 0800 454 545. The comparison of betting sites in Ghana covers the licensed side of the trade for ordinary punters.

Questions and answers
Can a Ghana Premier League player bet on other leagues?
Article 46 bans betting in relation to the league the player takes part in. The Black Stars briefing goes further and says betting on football is prohibited, directly or indirectly. A player should treat all football betting as off limits and ask the club's integrity officer before staking on anything.
What is the punishment for a footballer who bets in Ghana?
At least one year's ban and a fine of at least GH₵10,000 under Article 46(2) of the Premier League Regulations 2025. The 2019 rules set the fine at GH₵5,000. Manipulation cases can draw further sanctions under the GFA Disciplinary Code and the FIFA Code of Ethics.
Are referees and club officials covered by the GFA betting ban?
Yes. Article 46(1) names match officials, club officials and GFA officials alongside players and ball boys, and says the list is not exhaustive. Every participant signs the Integrity Declaration Form.
Can fans bet on Ghanaian football without breaking GFA rules?
Fans are not participants, so Article 46 does not apply to them. The GFA's dispute is with betting companies that price its fixtures without authorisation, which is a separate clause aimed at operators.
How do I report a player or official who is betting on matches?
The GFA Integrity Unit runs confidential reporting channels available around the clock, with anonymity promised. The Executive Council agreed in 2022 to reward volunteered information on match manipulation with GH₵50,000.
