18 and over only

You must be 18 or older to open a betting account in Ghana. Expect to be asked for your Ghana Card before a withdrawal.

Betting should cost no more than a night out. The bookmaker’s margin is built into every price, so punters as a group get back less than they stake. It is not a way to earn, and not a way to clear a debt.

Set limits before you bet

  • Decide what you can lose in a week or a month and treat that money as spent.
  • Set a deposit limit in your account before the first bet, and do not raise it after a loss.
  • Set a time limit as well as a money limit, and take breaks.
  • Keep betting money away from rent, chop money, school fees and susu contributions.
  • Do not bet when you are upset, tired or have been drinking.

Warning signs

  • Chasing losses: staking more to win back what you lost.
  • Borrowing, taking a loan app advance or selling things to bet.
  • Hiding your betting from family or friends.
  • Betting with money meant for essentials.
  • Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you cannot bet.

Any one of these is a reason to stop and talk to someone.

Take a break or self-exclude

Deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion sit in the account settings or with support at the bookmakers that offer them; check yours, and ask support if you cannot find them. If you hold accounts at more than one bookmaker, set them at each. The Gaming Commission of Ghana’s contact page prints a toll-free number, 00800 454 545, for anyone who wants to talk.

Where to get help

Talk to someone you trust, your doctor or a counsellor. The Gaming Commission publishes responsible gaming guidance on its site, and its contact page lists the toll-free line 00800 454 545.

If you are worried about someone else

Raise it calmly, at a time when they are not betting. Say what you have noticed, without blame, and offer to help them set limits or self-exclude. Do not lend money to cover losses.
