Can you bet on Ghana Premier League matches? What the GFA said, and did not

Can you bet on Ghana Premier League matches? The GFA says no betting company has its authorisation to price domestic games, a line it has held since January 2020 and repeated at its Congress on 20 August 2026. That is a football rule aimed at operators and league participants. Here is what the GFA said, what it did not, and what it means on your slip.

Key points

  • On 20 August 2026 GFA president Kurt Okraku told Congress that no betting company has been licensed to place odds on domestic games.
  • Article 46(3) of the Premier League Regulations 2025 bars operators from using league fixtures or results without GFA authorisation.
  • The rule binds operators and league participants; it does not create an offence for a fan who places a bet.
  • Operator licences come from the Gaming Commission under the Gaming Act, 2006 (Act 721); its register lists business types, not leagues.

Hearts of Oak against Asante Kotoko on a Sunday afternoon is the one fixture every punter in Ghana wants on a slip. You open the app, type the club name into the search box, and either a market appears or nothing does. The blank is not a bug. Since January 2020 the Ghana Football Association has said it has not authorised any betting company to offer odds on the league. Its president said it again on 20 August 2026. So can you bet on Ghana Premier League matches? Only where an operator chooses to price them, and that operator is selling a product the GFA says it has no right to use.

What the GFA said about betting on Ghana Premier League matches

The first statement on betting on Ghana Premier League matches came on 3 January 2020, signed by the GFA Communications Department. It described the Association as the owner, organiser, controller and manager of the league. It said the GFA had not authorised any betting company to place betting on the Premier League or any of its products. Companies were told to desist. The statement warned of legal action without further notice and said the GFA would alert the Gaming Commission of Ghana about the licensed companies involved.

The rule now sits in the regulations. The Executive Council adopted the Ghana Premier League Regulations 2025 on 1 July 2025. Article 46(3) says no betting or lottery company may use any fixture, result or other material of the league for betting purposes without authorisation from the GFA. The same article bans players, officials and clubs from betting on the league at all.

Then came the 32nd Ordinary Congress in Prampram on 20 August 2026, two weeks before the 2026/27 season opened on the weekend of 4 to 7 September. Kurt Okraku told delegates that no betting company has been licensed to place odds on domestic games. He presented it as part of a wider effort to protect the credibility of the local game. Fewer markets, in the GFA's reasoning, means less money tempting anyone to manipulate a result.

What the GFA did not say

The GFA did not say that a punter breaks any law. Article 46(1) and (2) punish participants: players, club officials, GFA officials, match officials, ball boys and clubs. The penalty is a ban of at least one year and a fine of at least GH₵10,000. A supporter in the stand or at a betting shop in Kumasi is not a participant under that article, and no GFA statement has claimed otherwise.

It did not cite a statute. The 2020 statement rests on the GFA's ownership of its commercial rights and names no Act of Parliament. The Congress remarks in August 2026 did not add one. Nor has the GFA said it will never license a company. At the 30th Congress in August 2024 Okraku said the Association was open to partnerships that met the required regulations.

It did not say that a bet already placed will be cancelled. Settlement of a slip is governed by the operator's own terms and by its Gaming Commission licence. The GFA has no role in that contract.

What this means for your slip

If a GPL market is on your app today, the money side is between you and the operator. Check that the brand is on the Gaming Commission register. A licensed operator answers to the Commission's complaints line on 0800 454 545; an offshore one does not. The ranking of betting sites in Ghana shows which brands hold that licence.

Expect domestic markets to disappear without warning. An operator that has been reported or warned can pull Kotoko, Hearts or Medeama fixtures in the middle of a season. Read your operator's voiding rule before you put a GPL leg inside an accumulator. It tells you whether the stake comes back or the leg is settled at odds of 1.00.

Black Stars matches are not touched by any of this. The GFA's statements speak of domestic games. A World Cup qualifier or an AFCON tie is priced like any other international fixture. If betting itself has become the problem rather than the rulebook, the responsible gambling page sets out where to turn.

Questions and answers

Is it illegal to bet on Ghana Premier League matches?

No law names the punter. The GFA's Article 46 bans league participants from betting and bars companies from using league material without its authorisation. The Gaming Act, 2006 regulates operators through the Gaming Commission. A fan placing a bet sits outside both sets of penalties.

Which betting sites have GFA authorisation for GPL odds?

None, according to the GFA. Its January 2020 statement and its president's remarks at Congress on 20 August 2026 both say no betting company has been licensed to place odds on domestic games. Any GPL market you see is offered without that authorisation.

Can I bet on Black Stars matches?

Yes. The GFA's position covers domestic competitions. International fixtures are priced by licensed operators like any other match, and the GFA has not asked anyone to stop.

What happens to my bet if the operator removes GPL markets?

A bet already accepted is settled under the operator's terms, since the GFA has no say over your slip. Read the voiding rule, and if a licensed operator refuses to settle or refund, the Gaming Commission takes complaints on 0800 454 545.

Why does the GFA ban betting odds on its own league?

It says unauthorised use of its fixtures infringes its commercial rights, and that fewer betting markets mean less money tempting anyone to fix a result. Okraku said in August 2024 the GFA was open to partnerships that meet the required regulations.
