The screenshot that does the rounds on a Monday morning shows a GH₵4 ticket and a six-figure payout underneath it. The Kumasi punter who collected GH₵990,650 in March 2017 had staked exactly that, GH₵4, on 15 European matches. Stories like his are why the jackpot tab gets tapped every Friday. The ticket is cheap, the format is simple, and the odds of filling it are the part nobody puts on the screenshot.
Betting jackpot in Ghana: how the ticket works
A betting jackpot in Ghana works as a pool-style pick. The bookmaker publishes a fixed list of matches for the weekend. MyJoyOnline described a 13-match version in 2016; the 2017 and 2018 wins reported by Graphic Online came on 15-match tickets. For each match you choose home win, draw or away win. The result that counts is the score at 90 minutes, so extra time and penalties do not matter.
One line of 13 or 15 picks is one ticket, and the 2016 report put the price at GH₵4. You may buy as many tickets as you like, each with a different combination, which is how the stake climbs: ten lines are GH₵40, fifty lines are GH₵200. The operator's rules page states the ticket price, the match list and the kick-off deadline for that week.
Postponed and abandoned matches are handled under each operator's own jackpot rules, and the treatment differs from one bookmaker to the next. Read that clause before you buy a ticket, because a late postponement on a Sunday can change what a 13-of-13 line means.
How the jackpot prize tiers pay
The jackpot prize is a fixed top sum for a full house with consolation tiers below it. In the 2016 format MyJoyOnline described, 13 correct paid GH₵200,000, while 12, 11 and 10 correct paid up to GH₵10,000, GH₵5,000 and GH₵2,500. The word 'up to' matters: a tier is a pot, and everyone who reaches it shares it.
The October 2016 draw shows the sharing in practice. Six punters won a combined GH₵7,500. One had 11 correct and took GH₵5,000 alone; five had 10 correct and split GH₵2,500, which is GH₵500 each on a GH₵4 ticket. A good return, and a long way from the headline figure.
Top prizes are paid as a lump sum by the operator, and the 2017 report said the GH₵990,650 was due later that month in one payment. Since 2 April 2025 no 10 percent tax is withheld from betting winnings, so a jackpot payout today is the full approved amount.
The real odds of 13 of 13
The real odds are a counting problem. Each match has three outcomes, so a 13-match ticket has 3 multiplied by itself 13 times possible fillings: 1,594,323. A 15-match ticket has 14,348,907. Pick at random and that is your chance of a full house with one line.
You do not pick at random, of course, and the match list is chosen to be hard. Suppose you are right 60 percent of the time on each game, which is a strong hit rate on evenly priced fixtures. Multiply 0.6 by itself 13 times and the chance of 13 of 13 is about 0.13 percent, one line in roughly 770. On 15 matches the same hit rate gives about 0.05 percent, one in roughly 2,100. Buying ten lines does not multiply the chance by ten unless each line differs in the right places.
Compare that with the prize. One GH₵4 line in 770 at GH₵200,000 is a far better expected return than most casino games, which is why the pools are capped, shared and tied to hard fixtures. The arithmetic says the ticket is cheap entertainment with a small chance of a large sum, not a plan.
The winners you read about
The winners who reach the news are real, and they are the whole point of the format for the operator. In March 2017 Graphic Online reported a Kumasi resident, Kwame Fosuhene, collecting GH₵990,650 from a GH₵4 ticket on 15 matches. The games came from the Premier League, Championship, Serie A, Ligue 1, La Liga and Bundesliga, and the paper called it the largest sporting jackpot in the country. In August 2018 the same paper reported a second-year university student, registered as Michael A., winning GH₵500,000 on a weekly 15-match jackpot that included an Atletico Madrid draw with Valencia.
Two winners in two seasons, out of every ticket sold across the country, is the honest frame. The operator paying those sums must hold a sports betting licence on the Gaming Commission of Ghana register, and the Commission takes complaints about licensed bookmakers on 0800 454 545. You must be 18 or older to buy a ticket.
